Leveraging AI to Streamline Operations

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly becoming one of the most transformative technologies shaping the future of national defense. As military operations become increasingly data-driven and globally interconnected, the ability to process information, anticipate threats, and make faster, more informed decisions has become a strategic imperative. These themes were at the center of the AFCEA ALAMO ACE Conference held in San Antonio, Texas, where Shivaji Sengupta, CEO of NXTKey Corporation, moderated a distinguished panel discussing “Leveraging AI to Streamline Operations for the Department of Defense.”
The panel brought together senior leaders from the Department of Defense and industry who are actively shaping the future of Artificial Intelligence within defense operations. Joining Shivaji Sengupta were Bill Streilein, Chief Technology Officer at the Department of Defense’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO); Jason Bonci, Chief Technology Officer for the Department of the Air Force; John Carbone, Senior Technical Director and Chief Solution Architect at Forcepoint Federal and Adjunct Professor of Applied AI and Data Science at Baylor University; and Richard White, Senior Strategic Solutions Architect at Leidos. Together, they examined how AI is moving beyond experimentation and becoming a foundational capability for improving mission effectiveness across the Department of Defense.
A central message throughout the discussion was that Artificial Intelligence should not be viewed as replacing human expertise, but as a powerful decision-support capability that enables military leaders, analysts, and operational teams to act with greater speed, accuracy, and confidence. Modern defense organizations generate enormous volumes of operational, intelligence, logistics, and cybersecurity data every day. AI provides the ability to rapidly analyze this information, identify patterns that would otherwise go unnoticed, and deliver actionable insights that improve decision-making at every level of command.
One of the most significant opportunities discussed was the application of AI to enhance operational decision-making. Military leaders increasingly require real-time situational awareness across multiple domains, including land, sea, air, space, and cyberspace. AI-powered analytics can synthesize data from numerous sources, helping commanders evaluate potential courses of action, assess operational risks, and allocate resources more effectively. Rather than replacing command decisions, AI enhances human judgment by providing faster and more comprehensive analysis.
The panel also explored how Artificial Intelligence is transforming logistics and supply chain management areas that are essential to military readiness but often receive less public attention. AI enables predictive maintenance of equipment, demand forecasting, inventory optimization, transportation planning, and supply chain risk analysis. These capabilities reduce downtime, improve asset availability, and ensure that personnel and equipment are positioned where they are needed most. As global supply chains become more complex and contested, AI-driven logistics will continue to play a critical role in maintaining operational readiness.
Cybersecurity emerged as another area where AI is already delivering measurable value. The Department of Defense operates one of the largest and most complex information environments in the world, making continuous cyber defense an enormous challenge. AI is enabling security teams to detect anomalous activity more quickly, correlate massive volumes of security data, automate threat hunting, prioritize incidents based on risk, and accelerate response efforts. As adversaries increasingly employ AI to develop more sophisticated cyberattacks, defensive AI capabilities will become indispensable for protecting military networks and critical infrastructure.
The discussion also highlighted the growing role of AI in autonomous and semi-autonomous systems. From unmanned aerial vehicles and autonomous maritime platforms to intelligent ground systems and robotic process automation, AI is expanding the capabilities of defense operations while allowing personnel to focus on higher-value mission activities. Panelists emphasized, however, that human oversight remains essential, particularly in applications involving mission-critical or potentially lethal decisions. Responsible implementation requires balancing technological advancement with appropriate governance and accountability.
Beyond operational systems, Artificial Intelligence is beginning to improve workforce management and organizational effectiveness. AI can support talent management, workforce planning, training personalization, knowledge management, and administrative automation, allowing skilled personnel to spend more time on mission-focused activities instead of repetitive administrative tasks. As AI adoption grows, the workforce itself will continue to evolve, requiring new skills in data literacy, AI governance, cybersecurity, and human-machine collaboration.
A recurring theme throughout the panel was that successful AI implementation depends on much more than sophisticated algorithms. High-quality data, secure infrastructure, robust governance, and organizational trust are fundamental prerequisites for effective AI. Without reliable and well-governed data, even the most advanced AI models can produce inaccurate or misleading results. Panelists stressed the importance of establishing strong data management practices, implementing comprehensive cybersecurity protections, and maintaining transparency in AI-assisted decision-making processes.
Ethics also featured prominently in the discussion. As AI assumes a larger role within defense operations, organizations must address important questions surrounding bias, transparency, explainability, accountability, privacy, and responsible use. The panel emphasized that AI systems should be developed with human oversight, rigorous testing, and governance frameworks that align with legal, operational, and ethical standards. Responsible AI is not simply a compliance requirement it is essential for maintaining trust in mission-critical environments.
The conversation further examined how organizations can successfully adopt AI by fostering a culture of innovation. Technology alone does not drive transformation. Successful AI initiatives require leadership commitment, cross-functional collaboration, workforce education, and a willingness to modernize existing business processes. Rather than pursuing AI as a standalone technology initiative, organizations should focus on solving specific operational challenges where AI can deliver measurable improvements in efficiency, effectiveness, and mission performance.
Looking ahead, the panelists agreed that Artificial Intelligence will continue to reshape virtually every aspect of defense operations. Future developments are expected to include increasingly autonomous decision-support systems, advanced predictive analytics, AI-enabled cyber defense, intelligent logistics, digital engineering, and greater collaboration across military services. As AI capabilities mature, opportunities to share platforms, models, and best practices across the Department of Defense will become increasingly important for accelerating innovation while reducing duplication of effort.
The session concluded with an engaging discussion on how organizations can measure the return on investment from AI initiatives. Rather than focusing solely on technology adoption, panelists encouraged agencies to evaluate improvements in mission outcomes, operational efficiency, decision speed, readiness, cybersecurity resilience, and workforce productivity. These measurable benefits ultimately determine the success of AI investments.
The overarching message from the AFCEA ALAMO ACE Conference was clear: Artificial Intelligence is no longer an emerging capability for the Department of Defense it is becoming an operational necessity. The organizations that will lead tomorrow’s defense environment are those that responsibly integrate AI into mission execution, strengthen data governance, invest in workforce development, and maintain a strong commitment to ethical and secure AI implementation.
As the defense community continues its digital transformation journey, AI offers unprecedented opportunities to improve readiness, strengthen national security, optimize operations, and enhance decision-making across every mission area. The challenge moving forward is not whether AI should be adopted, but how to implement it responsibly, strategically, and in ways that empower the men and women who protect our nation.
